Parents with Disability and Child Protection

Four patterns we see repeat, and what services can do differently

Examining key barriers faced by parents with disability and outlining practical changes to deliver earlier, more accessible support.

about

Parents with Disability and Child Protection

Parents with disability, and parents raising children with disability, can face significant barriers to accessing the support they need before challenges reach crisis point. Drawing on casework experience and parent voices, the report identifies four recurring patterns that can shape families’ experiences of the child protection system.

The report calls for a more accessible, disability-informed approach that prioritises support before crisis, assesses parenting capacity with appropriate supports in place, and treats help-seeking as a strength rather
than a risk.

It recommends practical changes including earlier access to support, supported decision-making, plain-language communication, advocacy, peer support, and stronger safeguards around assessments and voluntary care agreements.
